Ra Ra Riots

Whether it’s over the pyrrhic victory of Berlusconi, unions and things in the UK, or, really, anyone in Greece that doesn’t believe in accounting… Everyone is rioting all over the place! I find it all so exciting. Rioting is caring, it is an indication of the valor and vitality of a country’s aggregate pulse.

And really, I can only offer commentary from the side of Greece. It seems the world, as a general statement, both scolds and feels bad for Greece. Scolds it for being shady, sneaky, irresponsible, selfish and gluttonous. In other words, for showing such a striking resemblance to the United States’ ill conduct. US actually has legitimized institutions and complex, bureaucratic systems that well surpass the capacities of Greece’s archaic red-tape. And feels bad for it because, well, its so needy. But even so, Greece is very used to behaving poorly, showing no accountability, asking repeatedly for money even when it has nothing good to show for it’s expensive lifestyle while those around it continue to throw money at it in hopes that it’ll shut up and learn. Or really, just, shut up.

I am getting ready for my winter trip. I am leaving for Greece in a month, and I expect to find the climate similar to how I left it in August. Yes, unemployment is up, many are jobless, many are receiving unemployment. Similar to here, but people didn’t seem to be roughing it too much. Yes, I’m sure some have found themselves in catastrophic situations, but I’ll never forget what one of my professors once told me: “They just like to complain. They’re grateful for any reason to strike, yell or riot”. This is very true.

I was watching the Greek version of the John Stewart show yesterday and they were having a field day over Berlusconi and laughing themselves silly about Italians rioting over his recent victory. The irony.
