WikiLeaks

I don’t spend much time thinking about politics. If anything is ephemeral, it’s politics, and if the general climate is changing at such a high pace during the course of one day to another, the very effort of keeping up seems futile. Even if you are successful in doing so, what exactly does that do for you?

Many might argue that it is the mark of a truly educated person; to know and own “politics”, but I disagree. I think that one’s intellect is better employed through the focus on economics, finance and the press of corporations, if you’re bag is current issues…or you could do without the present altogether and submerge yourself in history, literature and the classics. Or comic books. Really, anything but politics.

I especially hate having conversations about politics. Most of the time, as I’ve found, your counterpart has no idea what they’re talking about. Which, even this statement is ludicrous… how do I know what I’m talking about? How do I know that any rules and givens I’ve established about politics aren’t inherently wrong? Politics are dark, they belong to those concerned with caves and the underworld of the outspoken. Talking about politics is like having a conversation about a painting in a windowless room. At night. In a world where fire or electricity doesn’t exist and people have to depend on the Aurora Borealis for light. And everyone lives in Canada or Russia as a result…

WikiLeaks is the Aurora Borealis in this situation… and it scares me a little. WikiLeaks has captured by interest.

As with any public resource, it will, eventually, be exploited by those that stand to gain from this exploitation. It is the tragedy of the commons and it is inevitable. Everyone’s wide eyed now, people are shocked, outraged, comments of public executions are being thrown around… It’s a crazy time. People are being blinded by the brilliance of truth, but it’s a skewed truth. How can it not be? The very existence of WikiLeaks is reason enough for scepticism. If something were truly detrimental to foreign policy, it simply wouldn’t exist. Because it does, WikiLeaks must provide some service, some benefit to the very institution it is trying to make transparent. I just don’t know who it’s benefiting exactly…

Am writing a thesis on Public Trust in WikiLeaks, the Media and the Government and need to know what your opinions are. The online survey is multiple choice and will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Please follow the link: http://www.kwiksurveys.com/?s=ILLLML_9669e09d. Would be great if you would encourage others to do the survey also.
